Fragile Reign by Stacey O'Neale

It’s been a week since all hell broke loose…

Rumors of King Taron’s weakened powers have left the air court vulnerable. Kalin is desperate to awaken her akasha powers, except she doesn’t know how. Tension within the court is at an all-time high. Pressure is mounting for her to ascend to the throne, but a halfling has never ruled over any court. To solidify her position, the council has advised her to marry Sebastian—a high ranking air elemental she’s never met and her betrothed.

Will Kalin sacrifice her relationship with Rowan to strengthen her court?

Rowan and Marcus return to a fire court in turmoil. Liana’s death has fueled the fire elementals’ distrust against the air and woodland courts. The unbalanced elements have set off natural disasters all over the mortal world. Rowan takes the throne to restore balance, promising to unite the fire court. But not all elementals are happy with his leadership. Many are secretly loyal to Valac, which means Rowan needs to find allies for his cause.

Can Rowan unify the court of fire before the elements destroy the world?

Excerpt from FRAGILE REIGN

Rowan
After Marcus left, the lack of sleep and overuse of my power had finally caught up to me. My lids were heavy, making it hard to keep my eyes open. I laid down on the nearest bed, sinking into the softness of the vanilla scented pillows. I could rest here until tomorrow, and then meet Kalin on the beach at sundown. As I closed my eyes, I imagined her in that sexy sundress with the ocean breeze wafting through her red curls. My lips tingled remembering the raspberry taste of her kisses. With all this craziness going on, she was the one thing that made sense. The only person who could make me forget about everything for a little while. Kalin was the one I wanted. The only one I needed. I shook my head. What was wrong with me? It was too soon to be thinking about this stuff, right? It had only been a few weeks. And what did I know about real feelings, anyway? Had it not been for Marcus, I would never even know what it felt like to care for someone. Love was never part of my life. My mother thought love was a weakness—a totally worthless emotion compared to power and control. But that still didn’t explain how I was feeling. Why everything seemed better when Kalin was around. Why my fingers ached to touch her. Why her pain shattered me to the core. I put my hands over my face. Or, maybe the lack of sleep was making me delusional. With a smirk, I gave in to the darkness that was overwhelming me and fell asleep.

Excerpt:
By the time we were halfway through reviewing the second chapter, I was fully engrossed by the disparity between the two sides of my body and had completely and utterly lost focus on Organic Chemistry. All of my focus was on the parts of my body that pressed against Colin. I only hoped Colin wouldn’t notice.
            “You alright, Ash?”
            And, of course, he did.
            “Huh?” was my brilliant answer.
“Are you okay? You’re kind of out of it.”
I needed an excuse. I didn’t think, "Oh, I was just daydreaming about having your body pressed against mine," would cut it.
“Oh, um, I’m sorry.” I shook my head, trying to dispel the fog. “I was just trying to figure out where I was going to sleep tonight. Becca went home, and I didn’t think to borrow her key.”
            Awesome save, Ashley.
“Rookie mistake,” he joked and nudged his shoulder into mine, pushing his body harder against my side. “I forget that this is your first semester here. It’s strange. I feel like I’ve known you so much longer than just a couple of months.”
Then, he turned his face to mine—it was just a couple of inches away—and smiled warmly. I looked into his eyes, and the heat that had been just in my right side spread through the rest of my body.
Colin’s expression suddenly changed, and he looked away.
“You could, you know, sleep in here.” He shrugged.
He looked so nervous that I actually smiled.
“I’d sleep in Brett’s bed, of course.” He looked up at me and continued, more confident now. “I won’t try anything funny.”
I don’t know how it slipped out, but all of a sudden, I heard myself reply in a husky, flirtatious voice, “It’s not the funny stuff that I’m worried about.” Then, I felt the corners of my mouth tip up.
I had no idea where it came from. As soon as the words came out, I knew I shouldn’t have opened my mouth, and now that they were out there, I couldn’t take them back.
Suddenly, the entire atmosphere of the room changed. The air was thicker somehow, and I was even more aware of Colin next to me, as if that were possible.
Our eyes locked, and he leaned toward me, closing the inches of space between us.
I knew he was going to kiss me. I also knew I wasn’t going to stop him.
I closed my eyes and tilted my head back, knowing this may be a bad idea and that it may change things—and not in a good way—but also knowing that right then, at that second, and in that moment, I couldn’t stop it.

And as I waited for Colin’s lips to touch mine, I realized that there wasn’t anything either of us could do to stop it. There wasn’t anything anyone could do to stop it.

VIP by Riley Edgewood
(Rock & Release, Act #1)
Publication date: November 17th 2014
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:
VIP is the first act of Rock & Release, Riley Edgewood's three-part new adult romance serial!
When Cassidy Evans scores VIP tickets to a concert, she decides to use them for one carefree night before beginning a summer internship at her father’s Fortune 500 company. But one carefree night turns into a few too many martinis—with two unexpected twists: A steamy encounter with Gage Logan, sexy singer and guitarist, and a tempting job offer from Gage's boss to work at the concert venue she now knows quite intimately.

She definitely can't take the job. Her internship is an opportunity any business major would kill for. But the thought of working with her father, a man furious with grief over a family tragedy that struck six months ago, fills her with dread.

Then there's Gage. Working with him all summer could be hot. Cassidy can't stop flashing back to their night together. Molten kisses. His hands smoothing across the skin of her belly. The weight of his body above her own…

And suddenly the decision about how to spend her summer is much, much harder to make.

VIP (Rock & Release, Act I) is out now!! The final two acts of the Rock & Release serial, Starstruck and Show Stopper, launch on December 1 and December 15, respectively.

Goodreads ** Amazon ** B&N ** iTunes ** Kobo

Author Interview:
  • What inspired you to write VIP (Rock & Release, Act I)?

My (awesome) friends gave my husband and me VIP tickets to a concert (Steve Miller Band & Journey—fantastic show, by the way), and at the pre-concert VIP bar, I sat there watching the college-aged staff working their shifts and realized it could be really fun setting for a story. Drinks, musicians, that "new adult" period of life… I let my imagination run away and it came back with Cassidy.

  • This is a serial, right? Why did you serialize Rock & Release into three acts?

Well…I do call it a serial because the plot arc reaches across all three acts of Rock & Release. Each act is between 30 & 40k words and each releases two weeks after the last. (In order: VIP, Starstruck, & Show Stopper). At first I planned to put it out as a novel all at once, but a writing friend suggested it worked well in three parts. PLUS, this way, since I'm a debut author, readers can pick up the first act (VIP) for cheap (only $0.99) and decide if they want to keep going from there. I thought it might be a better way to allow readers to take a chance on a debut without forcing them to spend the full cost of a novel the first time.

  • Tell us something you love about your main characters that we can't tell from the blurb?

Hmmm. Let's see… Cassidy loves whiskey. Not that it plays a huge part in the story, but it's always been interesting to me because I couldn't STAND whiskey when I was in my young twenties. (Don't love it now, either.) But there's a reason for it, and it's something she shares with her father, which is cool. Gage is sexy and sweet (that's in the blurb!) but he has some serious stuff going on with his family. And then there's Luca James, who's not in VIP but plays a very prominent role in Starstruck and Show Stopper. He's got a few dark secrets…and that's really all I can say about that.

  • Obviously, authors love their main characters—but who are your favorite secondaries?

This is too hard to answer! I love so many of my secondary characters—and even the tertiaries, too. Let's see… There's Vera, who doesn't necessarily have the best taste in guys, but is super team girls supporting other girls, which is a trait I adore. Teagan, Cassidy's oldest friend who has some issues and can come across a little rough, but came to me so fully formed she'll be getting her own book in the future. Clark, who's more of a tertiary character so I couldn't push more of his story into this one, but he's funny and a flirt and I just love him on and off the pages. Zach. Zoey. Katy… I could go on and on—I really do love all my characters! Even most of the bad ones.

  • Tell us three things about yourself we can’t discover by reading your author profile.

Ummmm… I went skydiving on my 21st birthday, and it was amazing. (Not sure I have the guts to do it again though!) I competed as a gymnast while growing up. (I even competed at the same competition as Dominique Dawes once! #amazing. I also was on an Olympic training team for a while.) I have four tattoos, including a little star on the inside of my middle finger, and I love it.

  • What are your favorite new adult titles by other authors?

I *loved* All Lined Up by Cora Carmack. (I have the second book of that series lined up (pun = totally unintentional at first) and waiting on my kindle as my prize for finishing my next book). Easy by Tammara Webber. All of Chelsea Fine's NA, too. And More than Exes, Elizabeth Briggs' new adult rock star novella that just came out.

  • What's next from Riley Edgewood?

Well, Starstruck (Rock & Release, Act II) comes out on December 1, and I'm really excited about it! In this act, international rock star Luca James sweeps into town, and he's just…yummy.  Show Stopper (Act III) releases December 15 as the final part of Cassidy's story. And the next book in this series, a companion novel (full-length, this time) is coming soon! This one's a sexy lil beach romance! (New Adult, of course.)

  • Anything else you want to share with readers?

I love hearing from readers—so drop me a line anytime!

Excerpt:
I sit opposite him on the bed, leaning against the headboard. I clutch a pillow against my lap. "Last night was…" I stop for a moment as it hits me. Last night was the first night I've had in ages where I didn't feel sad. Or anxious. Or tense. Though it's all flowing back now. I do my best to stem it and force myself to keep eye contact with Gage. "I don't regret last night—not a single part of it."
"Maybe not right now, but—"
"I wouldn't regret it even if you hadn't stopped us from going further." I rub the fabric of the pillowcase between my fingers. So much for not talking about it. But he feels so bad, I can't let him think he made any sort of mistake. But I also can't look at him with my next words. "I wanted you to…touch me. Long before I got so drunk."
The sharp tug in my belly—cutting through the nausea of my hangover and blossoming hunger—makes me realize just how much I'd like him to touch me again.
"Really?" He sounds relieved, and I risk a glance at his face. Worry in his expression's been replaced with a wicked little glint. "Does that mean I can see you again?"
"I think I'd like that." I know I would.
"We can try sober next time, with dinner instead of drinks."
"Oh, I see. Somewhere public then? You don't want me back in bed?" The happiness flushing through me brings out my flirty side. He wants to see me again. This wasn't just a one-night stand. Or whatever a non-sex one-nighter is called. Even if I can have one more night with him—one more night like last, where all I have to care about is having fun and the way Gage's lips feel, the way his mouth tastes. His gorgeous, nimble fingers… Sign me right on up.
"It didn't seem to me that public places really stop you." He's grinning now, and my lips curve up to mirror his expression.
"Then we'll definitely need drinks with that dinner."
"No. If I'm going to take advantage of your ridiculous body, I want those pretty green eyes clear while you watch." He stands, holding a hand out. "And, in case that didn't spell it out enough, I want you back in bed."
I lace my fingers in his, hesitating a moment to enjoy the glow blooming between my ribs. "If I wasn't so hungover—and if I wasn't so mortified that we stole Vera's bed—I'd pull you back in here and give you your chance right now."
"If I hadn't heard your stomach rumbling for the past five minutes, I might have taken it."
Oh damn. Stupid hunger noises.

He yanks me up and leans in close, whispering, "And if you keep talking that way, you'll force me to sit through a very uncomfortable breakfast."

Hunted-3D-Paperback-eReader Book 1: Hunted Deep in the heart of New York City’s netherworld, a horrible disease is ravaging the vampire community. The VampireCouncil is on a crusade to obliterate those infected, and Harrow Gates is target Number One. The unwitting source of the plague, he suffers from the same nightmarish symptoms as his victims. The world he'd been thrust into was cold, cruel, and intent on eradicating him, and the legions of afflicted vampires he created with his bite. A bounty hanging over his head, satisfying his hunger has become an enormous challenge for Harrow. The less he feeds, the more hideous and painful his lesions become. Constantly running for his life and learning new tricks to survive, Harrow is in no position to refuse when Pritchard Tack offers him a unique opportunity. Pritchard not only gives Harrow a new beginning, but also a purpose and a chance to rectify the chaos he created in the vampire world. However, the multi-billionaire has an agenda of his own. Jordan is a reluctant new vampire and a woman on a mission. After the demise of her family and her own transformation at the hands of Goran, the ruthless leader of the Vampire Council, her only focus is revenge. Constantly faced with one frustrating dead-end after another, a stroke of luck leads her to an underground facility that she suspects is the lair of the monster for whom she is looking. Upon learning more about the truth behind the secret bunker, Jordan must fight against her growing feelings of friendship and concern for the facility’s inhabitants. One man in particular threatens to pull her heart away from her sworn mission. There is something behind Harrow’s dark lenses that unsettles the hardened female. Once again, she trembles and hungers for something other than red-stained revenge. Is love strong enough to override her hate-fueled thirst for vengeance?

Book Trailer

Excerpt:
Harrow looked up at the sound of her footsteps, his eyes unfocused. His sunglasses were on the table, and his eyes were almost opaque in color when they settled on her. He sat up on the bed.
“Jordan, please go away.” He hissed and moved back when she approached. Her movement was slow and calculated. She was unwilling to startle him into action.
“Darling, I need to draw blood from you,” Jordan said, as if appeasing a crying child with sweet offerings.
His fangs were incredibly long. She wasn’t sure if she was imagining it, but she thought she saw them throb right before her very eyes. It had been almost two weeks since he’d last fed, and it looked like he had reached his limit.
Harrow licked his dried, chapped lips and inched away from her. The lesions on his arms, legs, and around his neck were raw, almost glowing red and had grown bigger. He gritted his teeth as if to dispel the demons of his disease. Jordan was certain it had something to do with the burning pain from the wounds as well as the pang of hunger. Starvation was a tough opponent, because it would eat you up alive and spew out your carcass after it finished you off.
“Make it quick, because I’m trying hard here.” Harrow appeared bone tired, his tone weary as he held out his arm after he made sure she was wearing gloves. “Move fast,” he reminded her as he eyed her jugular. The pulsing clearly began to excite him.
“I know you won’t hurt me.” She kept her voice low and held his arm. He was burning hot, and she felt like her hands would melt on contact. Harrow rested his arm on his thigh as she tried to keep her hands steady.
Harrow drew in a deep breath before exhaling with a curse. “Hurry up, Jordan.”
Once she stuck the needle into his skin, Harrow hissed and began twitching again. After she filled the evacuated collection tube with blood, she pulled out the needle and applied a little pressure to the entry site with her finger before taping it up.
“Get out now!” he screamed. “Now!”
Before she stepped away, she held his gaze for a moment and whispered the words she’d been dying to tell him.
“I love you, Harrow.”
Time stood still as soon as the words were out of her mouth. Harrow’s breathing slowed, and his twitching ceased for just a moment. “I love you more,” he said. “But please, get out of this room now.”
He didn’t scream the order, he whispered it as if it was a last ditch effort before he turned savage. Jordan walked out the door, which Leroy held open for her. Her heart was aching, but at the same time, it was soaring. How could her heart sing and lament at the same time?

Tormented by a dark secret, Tor must confront the past to prevent losing the best thing that ever happened to him. A life must be given for a life taken. Will Tor have to sacrifice himself before Allison pays the price?

Excerpt:
“Hey, what are you doing here?” Tor asked, walking closer. He reached out and touched her shoulder. Her muscles were tense and hard.
Allison pivoted, and her eyes gave her emotions away. Without answering, she launched a mean, right-handed slap across his face, and he staggered backward.
“That’s for leaving, you stupid, stupid man!”
For once in his life, Tor was out of wisecracks. He stared at her, stunned and at loss for words. Touching his cheek, he could still feel the sting. He’d screwed up.
“I’m sorry . . . I didn’t mean to leave just like that. I—I got a little carried away.” Tor had no idea how to do the whole apology thing, but he tried.
Allison shook her head. “Do you know how it feels to think I might lose you? I lost Daddy already. Please don’t put me through that kind of hell again.”
Her plea tore at his heart. He had forgotten to consider her feelings.
“Ally, I apologize . . .” He moved closer, aching to touch her.
“I don’t think I’d live if I lost you.” Allison closed the distance between them and wrapped her arms around his waist.
Closing his eyes, Tor breathed in her scent and thanked his lucky stars he hadn’t blown his chance with her. “You won’t. I’ll be with you until you’re sick of me.”
“If you ever pull a number like that again, I swear I’ll kill you myself.”
Atta girl! That was the Allison he had come to love.
“I won’t give you a reason to get rid of me.” He tugged at her arm and directed her to the door. “I want to show you exactly how sorry I am. Let me make it up to you.”
Allison stopped walking and turned to face him, her eyes narrowing. “And how exactly are you going to do that?”
He waggled his eyebrows and grinned. “You’ll find out . . . in the bedroom.”

Author Interview:
1.      Please tell us about your books.
Hunted is the first installment of The Gates Legacy series. It’s a story of a diseased vampire running from the Vampire Council who has issued a warrant to kill him, if found. This story delves into the difficulties of the affliction as well as the elation of finding a cure. Harrow, the hero in the story, partnered with a multi-billionaire, who is also looking for a cure. Together, they helped other unfortunate vampires who were in the same predicament. In the facility where Harrow lived, he stumbled upon a vengeful new vampire named Jordan, and a relationship developed out of necessity. Hunted digs deeper into each characters struggle to do what is right. Hope is the theme I imparted throughout the entire story. There is fast-paced action and comic relief throughout and despite the severity of their predicament. There are interesting secondary characters that keeps this story riveting, in my opinion.
Tormented, Book 2 of the series follows the members of the Tack Enterprises on their quest to find the killer of Prichard Tack, their leader as well as the two esteemed members of their team. Tor Burns in Hunted is all about cracking jokes and the sidekick to Harrow. In this particular book, we are introduced to his past and what drove him to push Allison away. He is a joy to write because he is a complex individual who expresses himself mostly by inflecting humor and sarcasm. Allison is work in progress simply because she was more timid in the first book. In Tormented, she developed into a confident woman, not only in the business aspect but also as a fighter who is instrumental in the pivotal scene of the story.

2.      Describe your journey into publishing.
Wow. I have to say that everything happened so fast. I started writing fan fiction about four years ago. A year after I began writing, I started developing ideas for original stories. I joined several contest with hopes of winning a publishing contract. Hunted is my first completed novel.
3.      What song(s) would be on the soundtrack for your book? Lover Lay Down and #41 by Dave Matthews Band. These songs are my absolute favorite.
4.      Tell us something unique about you (that can’t be found in your author bio). I read novels while I write.
5.      Tell us a little about your writing process. Any pre-writing rituals or routines? If and when I’m in the mood, I churn chapters like I change clothes. With Hunted, which was written in forty five days, I wrote one chapter per weeknight and multiple chapters during the weekend. I don’t need much while I write. I just want a quiet place, which in my case is the garage, away from our noisy dogs. I enjoy chatting while I write. If any of my close friends are online, I usually keep several chat windows open.  Last but not least, I MUST listen to my playlist; which consists of Dave Matthews, Matchbox Twenty, Counting Crows and John Mayer songs.
6.      How did you choose the cover of your book? Easy—I thought of the integral aspects in the story without giving much information away. And I have my friend, graphic artist, Claudia Trapp, of Phantasy Graphic Design, to pre-read the stories. After I gave her a few of my preferences, I let her run with the concept.
7.      Writing and editing can sometimes be exhausting. How do you relax? I talk to my hubby or my friends and have a glass of wine, or two, or maybe even more.
8.      If you could offer one piece of advice to a prospective author, what would it be? Keep writing. Surround yourself with positive thinkers.

Do you have any future projects in the works? Yes, I just signed off on Ascension, book 3 of The Gates Legacy series, which will be releasing on January 8, 2015. We’re also in the middle of edits for Reckoning, book 4, slated for release on June 2015.
