Excerpt

I’d been in Dogwood a month and had been down to the ocean only once. Insane, right? I lived at the beach and I wasn’t experiencing it.
It hadn’t been a priority, and honestly, I didn’t have a lot of free time on my hands.
When I wasn’t picking up shifts at Whitecaps, I was talking on the phone to Brian, shut up in my room or doing it lying on the couch if Tori wasn’t home.
Now I wasn’t shut up in my room or lying on the couch, quilt-covered and heart-shattered. I was no longer talking on the phone to Brian and I wanted to see the ocean. I wanted to feel the sand beneath my feet and skim the waves with my hand.
I had tons of free time tonight while Tori got laid. Might as well make the most of it.
I took the stairs down a level and stepped out beneath the deck.
A couple was sitting on a hammock going at it like their boat was sinking, sloppy-suctioning kisses and need-filled moans spilling into the air.
There had to be a handful of empty rooms in that house. They couldn’t pick one and save me the surround sound?
Gross.
I followed the sand-covered path down the beach, taking small sips of my daiquiri as I went. Deep voices grew louder the closer I got to the water. I wasn’t paying much attention to them. I was looking ahead and forward to feeling the temperature of the ocean and maybe even finding a couple of pretty shells when the voices grew loud enough to hear clearly.
Very clearly.
That’s when it happened.
I stopped, feet frozen and ears alert when one of the voices not only grew loud enough to focus on but also registered in my mind as a voice I’d possibly heard before.
“Don’t know why I gotta keep repeating myself. It wasn’t like that,” the man said, sounding irritated. “She was sweet and good to talk to. Funny and cute about shit. Real cute. The fact that she was also a stunner didn’t surprise me. I heard it in her voice. But for the last fuckin’ time, and I mean this, I’m not saying it again, that’s not what got me. I was fucked before I even saw her picture.”
“You saying you were gone for a girl you never fucking met, Brian? Not possible,” the other guy replied.
I sucked in a breath.
Brian.
A phantom heartbeat fluttered in my chest.
No way…
With gentle steps, I moved closer to the voices, reached the end of the path, and peeked around an overgrown bush, spotting the two men standing on the beach.
I watched the one guy, taller than the other, who had his back to me, cross his arms over his chest and say to his friend, “Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. You talk to Sydney one fuckin’ time and you’ll know where I’m coming from. It was that fuckin’ good.”
I squeaked then. Not a gasp but a squeak I tried to conceal with a quick hand to my mouth, cup hitting the sand, but it was too late.
They both heard it.
Two pairs of eyes sliced in my direction. I stared back at the one pair coming from the one voice I knew, in my blood and my bones and the breath filling me, I knew that voice and the man it belonged to.
He stared back, eyes narrowing to focus better, focusing enough to make me out where I stood then going round and filling with surprise.
Pain lanced through me.
I wanted to run. To him or away, I didn’t know which urge was stronger, and it felt like I was being pulled in both directions by forces I couldn’t fight so I stood there, staring back as my hand uncovered my mouth and skimmed my throat.
“Brian?”
He was moving before I spoke, long legs closing in fast, and before I could blink, he was right in front of me, close enough to smell and feel if my eyes were closed but I definitely couldn’t test that theory right now.
I stared unconsciously into his face, tilting my head back to do so and taking in every inch of him.
Dark hair buzzed close to his scalp, thick eyebrows and deep green eyes, several days’ worth of stubble coating his jaw, which appeared sharp beneath it and full, perfect lips, parted as he breathed slow and heavily.
Beautiful.
I knew he was.
“Oh, my God,” I whispered. “It’s you.”
He blinked, breath shuddering.
“You recognize me?” he asked.
I bit my lip to suppress a moan because, God, that voice. It melted my insides when it sweetly assaulted my ears and turned my bones to jelly. It always had but now, seeing the man behind it and the mouth responsible for it, watching it shape and twist those words so perfectly, I was done.
Done.
Toast.
A goner.
I blinked when he stepped closer.
“Syd,” he pressed, eyes desperate as they searched mine.
“Holy shit. Are you the girl?”
The other man moved beside us and slapped his hand against Brian’s back, who was keeping his eyes focused on me.
I looked to the friend and recognized Exhibit A from Whitecaps, who I now knew went by Cole.
“Uh,” I answered.
I was in shock. Was he expecting me to speak?
Cole grinned. “Small world,” he chuckled, looking between us. “Small fucking world. I’ll leave you two alone since you probably have a lot to talk about.”
He gave me a wink then shuffled past me and disappeared down the path, doing just that. Leaving us alone.
I was alone…with Brian.
Oh, God.
Oh…God. Now what?
I looked up and met pleading greens, filled with desperation I could feel against my skin.
Questions and confusion swirled in my brain. My stomach was doing nothing but flips and excited little twists.
It was Brian. My body knew Brian and it was acting up impulsively, reacting to that smooth familiar voice and more, and when he reached out and held my face, thumb sweeping over my cheek as his lips whispered, “Wild,” soft and ache-filled, I stopped thinking and feeling altogether and sprang, launching myself at him and into his arms, which curled instantly around me, drawing me nearer and higher until our mouths met in a kiss that hurt and healed so deeply my soul cried out.
Beautiful.
Knew it would be.

THE DIRTY DEEDS SERIES
FOUR LETTER WORD, #1
HIT THE SPOT, #2

Q&A With J. Daniels

1. Have you ever accidentally dialed the wrong number and ranted at them before?
Never! Although, if I did, I would feel just as bad as Syd does.

2. What was your favorite scene to write in this book? Probably when Brian and Syd finally meet face-to-face. The build up to that, the chemistry between them that you can feel when they first see each other, it was just pure magic. I loved it.

3. Chocolate or vanilla?
Vanilla in terms of ice cream. Chocolate in terms of every other sweet.

4. Who was your favorite character to write?
Syd. She was so quirky and fun and honest. I loved how she would ramble and how her heart was so open. She loved instantly, and I loved her for that.

5. What's the best part of being an author?
I get to put my crazy thoughts onto paper and people actually want to read them. Hearing readers say they enjoy my books still blows me away. I’ll never get used to that.

6. Aside from the hero and the heroine, which character did you love writing about?
JAMIE. God, what a jerk! I love him so much. His banter with Tori killed me. I love those two.

7. Name a book on your TBR right now that you can't wait to read.
The Bronze Horseman. I just snagged it and I’m dying to start!

8. What's next for J. Daniels?
Any other projects that you're doing right now that we should be aware of? I’m currently brainstorming the next two books in the Dirty Deeds series (Yes, there’s more!) And I’m also working on a few secret projects for 2017. I’d tell you, but then I’d have to sick Syd on you. And we all know how wild she can get.

9. Do you have a favorite snack that you like to munch on while writing?
Those sour Twizzlers. They aren’t messy.

10. When you are not busy writing wonderful stories to keep us lucky readers entertained, what do you like to do? Do you have a hobby?
I love piling my family into the car and going for long drives. No destination in mind. Especially in the fall, when we can keep the windows down. I also love to bake, but I don’t do it often. I’ll eat everything and leave none for my kids.

11. Do you have a favorite scene?
I loved the scene after girl’s night when Syd, Tori, Shay, and Kali are all attacking Wes’ car, dressed like cartoon characters. The guy’s showing up and dragging them away, and Tori’s interaction with Jamie. That entire scenario was crazy. I can’t imagine being a witness to that.

12. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received in your writing career?
Write the story you want to read. I can’t remember who told me that or where I read it, but I have it written down at my desk on a little post-it. It’s a good reminder.

13. What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve looked up in the name of research – or what do you think the government has maybe flagged you for?
Dick piercings. Also, I’ve Googled ‘does getting semen in your eye cause any permanent damage?’. I’m sure I’m being watched.

14. Which actor/actress would you like to see playing your main characters from FOUR LETTER WORD?
Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum were my muses for Syd and Brian. I mean, come on. How perfect would they be as Trouble and Wild?

15. Do you have any writing habits (i.e. At a coffee shop, in a writing nook at home)
I need quiet, or I’ll wear headphones. Noise distracts me. People distract me. I typically write at home in a room by myself, but that room changes all the time.

16. What are you most excited about this book?
That I finally get to share it with the everyone! I LOVE this story so much. Wild and Trouble and their world—Dogwood Beach. I want to live there and be friends with them.

17. If you had only one drink to write with ALL the time what would it be and why?
Water. I’m a water junkie. If I’m not drinking coffee, I’m drinking water.

18. What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
Write every day. Even if it’s only twenty words. WRITE. Stay inside your story. And remember why you’re writing it in the first place. Don’t lose that love.

Heat from his body washed over her, but she lifted her head to meet his gaze. “We don’t have a relationship.”
He smiled then, and the curve of his lips held more determination than amusement. “I’m not letting you run, and I’m certainly not letting you hide, baby. Although neither of us has been in this for the long haul, I’m staying in Wyoming for the moment. The first thing that’s going to happen is I’m going to figure out who dared put a hand on you and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
For the first time, she saw a side of him that gave her true pause. In the long haul, he’d be unbearably possessive. Why did that give her an intriguing sense of safety? “Knock it off,” she snapped in his face. “Get out of my business.”
That quickly, she found her back against the door and her front pinned by hard male. His hands planted on either side of her neck, his thumbs at her jaw, forcing her to look at him. “Something you need to understand and pretty damn quick is that your business is my business right now.” His thumb swept up and over the offensive bruise on her face.
“Step back.” Her voice trembled.
He ignored the very calm order. “No. You don’t want to tell me who did this? Fine. I’ll find out on my own, and I’ll have the name by the time I pick you up for supper. What you don’t want to do is deal with him or his case until I have that name. Kicking him in the balls might’ve just pissed him off more, and now you’ve let a bully stew on it for a while, which might be dangerous for you. Got it?”
“You have no right to interfere,” she whispered.
“Baby, I’ve been fuckin’ you for months. That gives me every right.” Anger glowed dark in his eyes.
“We’re done. Get out.”
His eyes softened. “You shouldn’t make statements you can’t back up.”
She shoved against his ripped abs.
He didn’t move a millimeter.
And then he did.
His head dipped, and his mouth found her neck and wandered up to her ear. His teeth scraped, and then his tongue licked the slight wound.
Of its own volition, her body did a full tremble.
He leaned back. “That.”
Her mind fuzzed.
His mouth slammed down on hers. She knew his kiss—often dreamed about it. Not soft and sweet . . . not even lustful. It was dangerous. From day one, she’d tasted danger on his tongue, and it burned her hotter than she’d ever been.
Never had she dated a bad boy, but after living her desired routine-driven life for years, she’d craved adventure, and he filled that need. He drew out a wildness she hadn’t realized she possessed.
He held her flush against the door, kissing her hard, sending a craving along her nerves that almost hurt. His tongue went to work, his left hand keeping her jaw open for him. His right hand found her hip and dragged her against the obvious bulge in his jeans. By the time he released her, she’d stopped thinking completely.
“What time are you finished today?” he asked, his breath heating her face.
“Fi-five,” she stuttered.
He leaned back and gently put her to the side. “Stay in the office until I come for you at five, Zara.” He ran his thumb across her bottom lip. “Cross me on this, baby, and I ain’t gonna be gentle.” He had already shut the door behind himself before she could take a whole breath.
She blinked several times, her fingers going to her still-tingling mouth. What had just happened?

Excerpt

What’s wrong? Does hearing that they’re with someone else bother you?”
“No! Of course not!” Just as quickly, I meet his gaze. “I wish I could erase what happened.”
He strolls slowly toward me, his scrutiny of the barn now shifted fully to me. To my face, and then lower, over the buttons of my dress that run from neck to knee. The dress does very little for my figure, though Celeste did put in darts at the chest to give it at least a bit of shape. “Why? Because you didn’t enjoy it?”
I open my mouth to say “yes,” but falter, because that would be a lie. I did enjoy it. “Because I don’t want you to be mad at me.”
“I let you go. I have no right to be mad at you for what happened.”
              “So it doesn’t bother you?”
“That you were with someone else? I fucking hat it. Every time I think about it, it’s like a punch to my gut.” He heaves a sigh, reaching up to run his finger along the collar of my dress. “But I’m not angry with you. I’m angry with myself for ever allowing things to go the way they did. Had I been completely open with you, had I put you before myself and Wolf Hotels, we could have avoided it all.”
His fingers leave my dress to wipe the tear that slipped from my eye. “I’ll try not to bring it up again. Okay?”
My head bobs up and down. I slide off the bale of hay and reach for him, needing to feel his mouth on mine, his body against mine. I press myself against him and rope my arms around his neck, pulling him into my mouth, trying to convey how badly I want him, how much I feel, with each graze of my lip, with each stroke of my tongue.
“You can’t start this now, Abbi,” he growls between kisses, his arms tightening around me, pulling me closer to him. I feel him growing hard against me.
“Why not?” It comes out in a painful moan.
“Because I have to go if I want to get to New York tonight, and we both know your mother would not be okay with his happening under her roof. Neither would your father. I can’t disrespect them like that.”
“It’s the barn, not the house,” I counter with a pout. He’s right.
And yet I can’t just let him go. I’ve been watching him all day long, sneaking in touches wherever I can, thinking about kissing him but unable to, imagining him undressed in front of me, remembering what it looks like when he strokes himself for me at night.
I’m completely wound up, and no amount of touching myself is going to satisfy me.
Plus, who knows when I’ll see him again!
“Hold on a second.” I pry myself away from him and dart over to the open doors. It looks like the last of the revelers have left. All the cars are gone, even the Enderbeys’. I can see Mama moving about in the kitchen. No doubt Daddy’s in his bed already, exhausted from the day.
My stomach flutters with excitement. “Follow me.” I smile at him as I head to the other side, the one that faces the open fields. The sun’s just dipping below the horizon, leaving streaks of hazy pink and purple, promising another hot day tomorrow.
“What’s out here?” he asks, eyeing the stack of hay that’s sitting just outside the door. It’s a nice place to sit and rest after a long day.
“No roof.” I smile as I reach up to unfasten the top button of my dress.
              He smirks. “Sex by semantics?”
“It’s the only way.” I drop my voice to a soft lull. “And I need you.”

wolf-prey-rdl-teaser-2

Oh my goodness ya'll!!!

I LOVED this book so much.

I remember back after the first book in this series came out I was a little leary to start it. (Even if everyone was freaking out about how good it was. Stupid me for not just blindly trusting them. They don't normally steer me wrong haha)

But seriously I remember going man do I really want to get into this this? And then Book one went on sale for free on Amazon and there I was diving right into Abbi and Henry's story. And I couldn't put it down! Like 2 days tops it took me to read. And honestly Wolf Prey went about the same way.

Nina has this was of completely captivating you as a reader, and draws you into her stories. Like there were times I was so wrapped up with everything going on with Abbi that I forgot to even check the time sometimes. And when I finally looked at the clock I realized I had been reading for hours straight.
But aren't the books like that the best ones out there? The ones that can so fully amerce you that it's like being a part of the story yourself. You can so clearly see the pages unfolding in your mind that it's almost like watching it happen rather than reading it (although I guess that's the beauty of reading. What it has the ability to do)

But it's not just Nina's beautifully seductive writing that does the job either.
It's her ability to create these intricate multi dimensional characters too.

I found myself so wrapped up in everything Abbi would go through. I would grow attached to Henry and then want to smack the guy too hehe.
They would make me feel so invested in their stories. So ready to choose a side and want to fight fr that character to have what they wanted. And then the addition of Jed (Which BTW I don't like that name. No clue why... I just don't. Maybe too many scary movies where the hillbilly crazy is named Jed or something ha!)

And yes even Abbi's overbearing quite aggravating mother was a good character. In her own way. I think it takes  alot of talent to write characters that we want to dislike sometimes. The ones that well I know I do this, want to reach into the book and freaking wring their necks (and I'm not talking about those annoying female characters I'm always complaining about. I dislike them for far different reasons)

Something else I just want to add about this whole thing was my adoring affections for Henry. I go back and forth how I feel about these alpha type characters. Love them hate them. Love them hate them. It's a cycle. Usually I start off as any sort of feminist would going don't take that garbage from him lady. He can't boss you around like that. You have a say you have an opinion and demands too. And yeah... That feminist crud tends to disappear pretty quickly and I totally cave adoring the hot dude, grumbling the whole time hehe. But seriously. I love those characters. There is just something about them that is so hot and so controlled. And that was Henry. I remember back in Wolf Bait being like girl run. Run far. You don't need no man like that (How stupidly naive I was) because I found myself rooting for Henry in this book. Absolutely hating Jeb on principal because he was not Henry in fact. (Yeah yeah there were a few things I liked about Jeb... *grumbles)
But seriously Like there's a few parts in particular where Henry asserted himself and man I was a total puddle of goo. It was so hot and would lead to even hotter sexy times*swoon
That man is just prime HOTT man, and I really loved how well Nina wrote him. How much personality and mystery she was able to give us while not making me feel like I wasn't getting him. Like I needed to break him down to figure him out (Although let's be honest it's me... So of course I was looking for things about him that probably weren't even there. Me ever the detective haha!)

And lets not forget about Abbi. I really really like her. (Yes yes get your gasping and shock over with now. I do tend to like SOME female characters)
something just clicked between her and I though. I felt so many things reading her story as it went. I would feel happy for her, and sad, and outraged on her behalf when her mom got all overprotective/overbearing crazy.
I loved that I bonded to this character when I really didn't expect that I would so much at the start of this series. So I have a really healthy respect for Nina, and her giving me this strong character I could follow and enjoy through the books.

So while I know this review is a tad shorter than my normal ones, I just want to add in case it wasn't clear. That I really really truly loved Wolf Prey and do hope that you go out and either start it, or if you haven't picked up book one yet go grab it. You won't be disappointed one bit. Take my word on that ;)

I give WOLF PREY *****5 STARS*****
